The Alabama REALTORS® Annual Meeting will be held October 14 at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa at the Convention Center. The 2018 Annual Meeting will focus on the Association’s governance, a celebration of Annual Awards and the installation of our officers, followed by a fun afterparty with a live band. On Monday and Tuesday, optional training opportunities will be available to assist with the professional standards and dispute resolution process for our boards and reinforce the fundamentals of local board leadership training.

Mediation is NAR's preferred method of dispute resolution. All local REALTOR® associations must, as a benefit of membership, offer the ability to mediate otherwise-arbitrable disputes. In some REALTOR® associations, mediation is required prior to an arbitration hearing. Traditionally, our industry disputes rely on negotiation for solutions. If negotiations fail, litigation is often initiated. Mediation involves the skillful intervention of a third-party, unbiased professional to help resolve disputes that arise between 2 or more parties.
The benefits of mediation are many! Mediation can resolve disputes, promote amicable resolutions, and reduce the number of cases requiring the more formal and complex arbitration procedures of the Board. It offers a win/win/win situation for all parties, and when successful, avoids the financial and emotional expense of litigation. Brokers who’ve utilized Mediation to resolve disputes report the following:
- “Trained Mediator was knowledgeable and persuasive.”
- “Mediation was a nice, comfortable way to resolve misunderstandings while avoiding a BINDING (and scary) Arbitration, or even worse, more expensive & time-consuming litigation!”

This seminar is an intensive, relaxed, informative, two-day learning experience designed to enhance and refine mediation skills. The seminar features mediation simulations guided by individual mediation coaches, and includes instruction & comprehensive support materials for REALTOR® participants to take home, allowing them to serve as mediators and ombuds for their state and local associations.
Lunch is included both days.
This intermediate-level REALTOR® Leadership Program workshop is designed to help you understand your role as a REALTOR® association leader. The workshop covers the following topics that will help you strengthen skills and gain confidence in your role as a leader: association leadership, staff/volunteer relations, participating in meetings, and building consensus. You’ll gain confidence in your role as a leader as you get more involved in association leadership. This three-hour workshop is led by a trained facilitator.
*Leadership 200 attendees are strongly encouraged to complete Leadership 100, an online course, prior to attending Leadership 200 to lay the foundation for the session being presented October 15.
PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS PROCEDURAL TRAINING
While this training is designed for board staff and/or members who will process ethics complaints and requests for arbitration and mediation, other REALTORS® may attend. For boards that have one or more staff, staff would be responsible for this function. For boards that do not have staff, the elected SECRETARY is the person primarily responsible (the board president is secondarily responsible) for this function. Directors and committee members (Professional Standards and/or Grievance) would receive some benefit from attending this session, but it is NOT a study of the Code of Ethics; it is a study of the procedural process involved in enforcing the Code of Ethics.
This course is free to attend.
