How REALTORS® Shape Stronger, More Connected Communities
June 9, 2026
When most people think about REALTORS®, they picture agents helping buyers find their dream home or assisting sellers in securing the best price for their property. While that's certainly a big part of the job, the impact of REALTORS® extends far beyond transactions. In fact, our profession plays a significant role in strengthening communities, supporting local economies, and helping neighborhoods thrive.
Let’s take a closer look at how REALTORS® accomplish this.
REALTORS® are community champions
One of the most important ways REALTORS® contribute to their communities is by serving as passionate advocates for the places in which they live and work. Agents know their local neighborhoods inside and out. They understand what makes their communities unique, from the schools and parks to local businesses and community events.
Because of this, REALTORS® are often some of the best community promoters. They don't just sell houses—they sell “homes,” and a home includes the lifestyle that comes with living in a particular area. Whether they're showcasing a vibrant downtown district, highlighting family-friendly amenities, or promoting upcoming developments, REALTORS® help attract new residents who are searching for the right place to live.
REALTORS® drive economic development
By helping attract new residents, REALTORS® contribute to local economic growth. The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) estimates that “one job is generated for every two home sales,” which would mean about 500 jobs created for every 1,000 homes sold. The Association also notes that each home sale contributes about $60,000 to the economy or Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This economic impact comes from activity across multiple industries, including mortgage lending, home inspections, moving services, remodeling, and more.
In addition, REALTORS® in the commercial sphere help businesses find suitable locations to establish or expand their operations. New businesses then bring jobs, increase tax revenues, and create services that benefit the community as a whole.
REALTORS® support local businesses
REALTORS® understand that thriving businesses help create desirable neighborhoods. It's not uncommon to see agents partnering with local coffee shops, boutiques, salons, gyms, and other “hot spots” for community events, client appreciation gatherings, social media promotions, etc. This not only increases the agent’s visibility but also helps generate new customers for these establishments.
Beyond introducing clients to local shops and restaurants, agents often connect homeowners with trusted landscapers, handymen, cleaning services, contractors, painters, and other professionals within their network. These referrals can provide a valuable source of business for local service providers while also helping new residents settle into their homes and build their own rolodex of trusted contacts.
REALTORS® encourage community involvement
Many agents are deeply involved in their community — volunteering their time, sponsoring local events, participating in charity fundraisers, supporting schools, youth sports teams, and nonprofit organizations, and much more. In fact, according to a 2023 NAR article, “REALTORS® volunteer at nearly three times the rate of the typical American,” with about 67% percent reporting that they volunteer monthly in their communities.
In that same article, NAR also noted that due to “deep connections, strong local relationships and skill at identifying needs and finding solutions, REALTORS® are in a unique position to serve neighbors and strengthen communities.” So, whether it's organizing neighborhood cleanups, supporting local food drives, or helping raise awareness through a 5K fundraiser, REALTORS® continually contribute to initiatives that improve the overall quality of life for residents.
REALTORS® help build strong neighborhoods
Agents help foster neighborhood stability by connecting families with homes that truly fit their needs and lifestyles. They also educate buyers about local resources, schools, community organizations, and neighborhood activities. This dedication helps homeowners establish roots and become active participants where they live, which ultimately encourages long-term investment in the area.
The impact of this guidance is evident in how long homeowners choose to stay in the communities they call home. According to NAR, "the median expected tenure in a purchased home is now 15 years, with 28% of buyers declaring it'll be their 'forever home' and that they never intend to move." In fact, NAR's 2025 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers found that homeowners are currently staying in their homes for a median of 11 years before selling—a record high.
As more and more homeowners put down long-term roots, communities benefit from stronger neighborhood ties, increased civic engagement, and a greater sense of belonging.
REALTORS® advocate for communities and the industry
Many REALTORS® serve alongside local leaders, volunteering their time on boards and committees that help guide initiatives related to housing, community development, economic growth, and more. Their first-hand knowledge of local market conditions gives them a unique perspective on the opportunities and challenges facing their communities.
REALTORS® also often take on leadership roles within local, state, and national real estate associations and other industry organizations. Through these positions, they help advance professional standards, advocate for property rights and homeownership opportunities, and support policies that benefit both consumers and the real estate profession.
Together, serving in this way allows REALTORS® to stay connected to both the communities they serve and the broader housing industry, helping ensure that local voices are represented.
At the end of the day, real estate is about more than properties—it’s about people, relationships, and communities. The work of REALTORS® helps shape neighborhoods where people can put down roots, build lasting connections, and support the long-term success of the communities they call home!
