Bill Would Require Home Builders to Provide Proof of Liability Insurance

SB 319, by Senator Tim Melton (R-Florence), would require residential home builders to provide proof of liability insurance to a homeowner before beginning construction and would allow the home builders licensure board to take action when there is a violation.

In the Senate Committee on Fiscal Responsibility and Economic Development a few weeks ago, Sen. Melson explained the bill is designed to provide consumer disclosure because there are many cases in which the consumer may be unaware a homebuilder does not have liability insurance.

SB 319 has already passed the Senate. The bill is pending action in the House and was referred to the House Committee on Boards, Agencies and Commissions last week.
