The “Move-In Ready” State: Why Alabama Keeps Drawing New Residents

In the recently released 2025 National Movers Study by United Van Lines, Alabama once again earned a spot in the top ten destination states for movers. The repeat recognition points to a clear trend across the country: Americans are searching for states that offer a strong mix of affordability, opportunity, and quality of life — and The Yellowhammer State continues to check all the boxes!

Where Americans Are Moving and Why

Now in its 49th year, the National Movers Study continues to offer one of the most comprehensive looks at how—and why—Americans are relocating. The annual study, along with its accompanying survey, examines interstate moving patterns and the factors influencing those decisions.

This year, the report found that people were most often relocating to be near family, followed by job opportunities. The results also show that more Americans are moving away from major metropolitan areas and toward smaller cities and towns, where housing is generally more affordable.

According to the findings, the top inbound states of 2025 were:

  • Oregon
  • West Virginia
  • South Carolina
  • Delaware
  • Minnesota
  • Idaho
  • North Carolina
  • Arkansas
  • Alabama
  • Nevada

While Nevada, Idaho, and Minnesota are first-time additions to the list, Alabama is no stranger to the spotlight. Making its sixth consecutive appearance, the Heart of Dixie continues to stand out as a place people are choosing again and again.

What’s Pulling People to Alabama

In 2025, 57.1% of Alabama moves were inbound. Among those, 33.9% were driven by family, 29.8% by job opportunities, and 19.8% by retirement.

So why is Alabama such a strong match for these movers? Well, affordability is definitely a major factor. In December 2025, the median home sales price was $245,615, well below the national average. That lower cost of housing, paired with one of the lowest property tax rates in the U.S. (second lowest, according to SmartAsset), makes Alabama especially appealing to families and retirees who want to stretch their budgets without sacrificing quality of life.

Alabama also offers a growing job market. According to the Alabama Department of Labor, employment increased by 35,819 in 2025, reaching a record high of 2,317,206 workers. In a January 2026 press release, Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed said the state “continues to lead the nation with one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country,” and that more people are entering the workforce and finding meaningful employment.

Beyond cost and career opportunities, Alabama also offers a lifestyle that’s truly hard to beat. The state’s mild climate and year-round access to outdoor activities make it a natural destination for people moving from colder regions. From hiking and fishing to beach trips along the Gulf Coast, Alabama offers residents the chance to spend more time outside and enjoy a slower, more relaxed pace of life.

Alabama’s continued presence among the top moving destinations shows the state is clearly on people’s radar. With affordable living, growing job opportunities, and a lifestyle that supports both families and retirees, the state offers a winning combination that keeps drawing new residents year after year.

Alabama is proving it’s not just a place to live…it’s a place to love!
