Primary Election Results Recap

Alabama voters went to the polls last Tuesday, May 19 for the 2026 Primary Election. Statewide voter turnout was approximately 23%. The election was successful for candidates endorsed by the Alabama Association of REALTORS® Political Action Committee (ARPAC). Ninety-four percent (94%) of ARPAC-endorsed candidates won or advanced to a runoff election on June 16, 2026. The endorsed candidates demonstrated a commitment to protecting property rights, supporting small businesses, and advancing policies that keep Alabama’s real estate market strong and stable. Below are several notable races.
In statewide races:
- Governor: U.S. Senator, Tommy Tuberville won the Republican primary with 85% of the vote. Former U.S. Senator, Doug Jones won the Democratic primary with 78% of the vote.
- Treasurer: Incumbent Young Boozer won the primary with 68% of the vote.
- Secretary of State: Lawyer Caroleene Dobson won the primary with 65% of the vote.
- Auditor: Incumbent Andrew Sorrell won the primary with 68% of the vote.
- Public Service Commission, Place 1: Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry won the Republican Primary with 75% of the vote defeating a longtime incumbent. James Gordon won the Democratic Primary with 58% of the vote.
Several major races are headed to runoffs on June 16:
- Lieutenant Governor: Current Secretary of State Wes Allen and former Republican Party Chair John Wahl advanced to the Republican runoff. State Representative Phillip Ensler won the Democratic primary.
- Attorney General: Former Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell and lawyer Katherine Robertson advanced to the runoff.
- Agriculture Commissioner: Douglas Mayor Corey Hill and businesswoman Christina Woerner McInnis advance to the runoff.
- U.S. Senate: Congressman Barry Moore and former U.S. Navy Seal Jared Hudson advanced to the Republican runoff, while Democrats Everett Wess and Dakarai Larriett will meet in the Democratic runoff.
Notable legislative races include:
- Senate: Senators Garlan Gudger, Randy Price, Chris Elliott, Donnie Chesteen, Jabo Waggoner, Andrew Jones, Jay Hovey, and Kirk Hatcher all won. Senators Dan Roberts and Greg Albritton were defeated.
- House: Representatives James Lomax, Chris Pringle, Susan Dubose, Chad Robertson, Rick Rehm, Steve Clouse, Neil Rafferty, Travis Hendrix, Patrick Sellers, Kelvin Lawrence, Curtis Travis, Penni McClammy, Berry Forte, Adline Clark, and Sam Jones all won. Representatives Phillip Pettus, Greg Barnes,Jim Carns, Matt Simpson, and Juandalynn Givan were defeated.

Voter turnout is projected to be very low, possibly between 10% and 13%. In 2022, an Alabama state senate race was decided by one single vote out of 17,000 votes cast on election day! Every vote can make the difference in the outcome of an election!
