Essential Home Features Buyers Consider When Shopping for a Home

As a REALTOR®, knowing what the average buyer values most in a home is important. According to a recent study conducted by the National Association of Home Builders, the list of essential features for a first-time buyer, though shorter, is very similar to that of repeat buyers. For example, the living room is the most essential feature to a first-time buyer, followed by a laundry room. Those two features are also the top two features for repeat buyers; however, the order of importance is reversed.
Here is the list of essential features that first-time and repeat buyers look for when shopping for their home.
First-Time Buyers

- Laundry room
- Dining room
- Garage storage
- Walk-in closet in master bedroom
- Shower stall/tub in master bath
- Front porch
- Great room
- 2-car garage
- Kitchen double sink
Repeat Buyers
- Laundry room
- Living room
- Walk-in closet in master bedroom
- 2-car garage
- Garage storage
- Kitchen double sink
- Dining room
- Patio
- Table space for eating in the kitchen
- Both shower and tub in master bathroom
- Hardwood flooring
- Energy Star appliances
- Great room
- Granite countertops
